I don’t claim to be a total environmentalist, but I try my best to reduce reuse and recycle wherever I can. Lately, I’ve become more aware of how my choices—especially in fashion—affect the planet. For me, it’s time to bring back slow fashion and celebrate craftsmanship.
The True Cost of Fast Fashion
Fast fashion is all about mass-producing inexpensive clothing at lightning speed to keep up with trends. It’s convenient, sure—but it comes at a huge cost. Over 92 million tons of textile waste are created every year due to poorly made clothes that wear out quickly. This waste pollutes waterways and harms ecosystems around the world.
And beyond environmental damage, fast fashion also hides troubling truths. Many workers in the industry endure unsafe conditions low wages and exploitative labor—some even facing child labor and forced overtime. The real cost of those cheap clothes is often hidden behind flashy ads and the pressure to stay “on trend.”
Choosing a Different Path
That’s why I’m trying to be more intentional with what I wear. I focus on quality over quantity. I support sustainable brands and love repurposing pieces I already own. Slow fashion brings back the heart of clothing—creativity, care and meaning.
Handmade and thoughtfully produced garments hold stories. They reflect time and skill and they last. That’s something worth valuing in a world full of throwaway fashion.
Small Shifts Make a Big Difference
The beauty of slow fashion is that it doesn’t demand perfection. Just awareness. Small changes—like mending a tear, shopping secondhand or simply buying less—can have a real impact.
Fashion should be an expression of individuality—not something that comes at the expense of people or the planet.
